Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones, causing loss of bone mass and strength, which further makes bones susceptible to sudden and unexpected fractures. The disease often progresses without any symptoms or pain. Generally, it is not discovered until weakened bones cause painful fractures. Most of these are fractures of the spine hip and wrist. Osteoporosis is a condition most commonly found in women and that too women in their post-menopausal stage.
Signs & Symptoms
Osteoporosis itself has no symptoms; its main consequence is the increased risk of bone fractures. Its possible signs may include:
- Back pain
- Stooped posture
- Loss of height
- Reduction in mobility
- Increased risk of falling
- Abnormal drop in BP on standing up
Causes
The most common causes of osteoporosis are:
- Women, especially older than 60 years of age
- Thyroid problems
- Bone cancer
- Certain genetic disorders
- Cigarette smoking
- Low amounts of calcium in diet
Diagnosis and Risk Factor
Osteoporosis can be detected at an early stage with a routine ‘Bone Density Test’, also called Bone Densitometry. This may be recommended as a routine test after Menopause.

- Have back pain, height loss or a bone that fracture easily
Treatment
Lifestyle changes are an important aspect of treatment of osteoporosis. Besides, several medications and therapies are also used.

- Medications to improve bone density
- Estrogen therapy
